Please read and consider the following:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Seriously. Did no one study US government in middle school?

Freedom of speech...

Just in general. There's an explosive "debate" on FB at the moment. I'm honestly sick of seeing the claim that, "We're losin' our freedom cause so-and-so was suspended by his employer for saying something racist/sexist/hateful! Whatever happened to our Freedom of Speech?!?!?!" When even elected officials claim that receiving punishment or being ostracized for saying something offensive, hurtful, or belligerent is a violation of their guaranteed rights as an American citizen, we have a fundamental, pervasive lack of understanding of what those rights are. It's just... sad.

It's the first amendment, as a NON-American I read it as such "no religion should be the boss of our government, but we should allow every religion a word in our country. We shall not condemn someone or something due to religious views."

All 100% true. Doesn't mean that freedom of speech isn't a state of mind and an issue of practice. Whether or not specified by law, I support the exercise of different points of view in any matter in which I have a say. Some won't, and that's legal.Doesnot mean I like it, in general.

Some football player got suspended for saying on Twitter that Micheal Sam kissing his boyfriend on espn was gross or disgusting or something. His supporters cite free speech, however the right to freedom of Speech only protects you from the federal government, not your work or the public.

You don't need to. It's just basic 4th grade social studies either being denied, forgotten, or overwhelmed by dogmatic conviction to a flawed belief.

The distinction as I see it is when you say something awful while representing your employer, and that employer is equally derided by the public as a result of whatever the employer said. Say something in your home or even in a closed, public setting, that's one thing. Say something using channels endorsed by your employer to millions of people? Your employer has every right to publicly chastise or punish you to at least demonstrate to the audience/customers offended that they don't espouse the belief. Ya know?

I'm thiiiiis close. If not for the grandparents who demand to see daily pics of the babies. I could, of course, choose to ignore the idiots. Some days though, I'm up for an infuriating flame war with elementary school dropout mouthbreathers.

You have the freedom to say stupid, stupid things without being swept away to the gulag by the secret police, but your boss has the freedom to fire your dumb ass for almost any reason, or none at all.

Why is that so hard to get?And it's no wonder unemployment is so high - the majority of people in this country apparently have no clue how to behave like a professional.

Shut the fuck up for like 30 seconds and read a book. Seriously. If your freedom of speech was being impeded, you probably wouldn't be able to bitch about it so much.

Yep. I just worry any time our impulse travels any distance toward "shut up" as a first reaction. Particularly when privacy is so fractured nobody has the ability to be an idiot in their spare time. That actually progresses toward a broad concept of one being owned by one' s employer, if you think about it.

The only debate in all of this is who and what circumstances define what is and isn't protected speech.

In this case, I don't think anyone really expects a professional football player to necessarily be the most socially enlightened soul. I also think the employer has the right to chastise that player for taking to the Twittersphere to condemn something he finds distasteful, when it's possible a large enough segment of their fanbase might take offense, or even if the World At Large decides the opinion is worth a larger dose of negative attention. That's just business.

This was driving me insane at lunch. Two co -workers, kept going "he shouldn't be punished" "He can say whatever he wants" "people are so over sensitive"

You're a highly visible member of an organization, that organization has every right to revoke that membership, when it sees fit.

The best part is the rollover text - "I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express."

freedom of speech means you won't be jailed for voicing unpopular or anti government views. It doesn't protect you from being socially ostracized for being a dick.
